Shawn Rubin, PsyD
Shawn Rubin, PsyD is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist whose practice is informed by extensive
training in the depth psychologies of humanistic-existentialism, liberation psychology, and
contemporary psychoanalysis. Dr. Rubin earned his doctorate from the Center for Humanistic
Studies Graduate School (CHS) in Detroit from 1997-2002, where he was mentored by
Humanistic Psychology Founder Clark Moustakas, PhD, and then by Kirk Schneider, PhD, the
foremost contemporary leader of the existential psychology movement. From 2005-2011, Dr. Rubin served as Core Faculty at CHS (which became the Michigan School of Psychology), Managing Editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, and from 2012-2020 as its Lead Editor.
From 2011 to 2015, Dr. Rubin was Executive Faculty at Saybrook University where he served as
Chair of the School of Clinical Psychology, and Program Director of both the PhD & PsyD
Degrees in Clinical Psychology as well as Founder of the Masters degree in Marriage & Family
Therapy & Professional Clinical Counselor Degree.
After serving consecutive terms as Member at Large (2009-12 & 2012-15), Shawnserved as
President of the Executive Board of the Society for Humanistic Psychology (2016-17), Division
32 of the American Psychological Association.
In addition to his published articles and book chapters, Shawn is also Co-Editor of “Humanistic
Psychotherapies: Handbook of Research and Practice, 2nd Edition” published by the American
Psychological Association. He serves as Co-Editor of University Professors Press, and is a Lead
Mentor in the Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy Program at the California Institute for
Integral Studies.

advocated for trans rights and inclusion with companies, local politicians, and school systems.
In 2023 he was recognized by Fairfax County Public School PRIDE for his contributions to
transgender children and teens as an affirming therapist and advocate. He serves as a Board
member of the Transgender Education Association of Greater Washington, DC and the Rocky
Mountain Humanistic Counseling & Psychological Association.
